Allen County Health Disparity Coalition
Lead: Renetta Williams
In 2003, Community activist Renetta H. Williams formed the Allen County Health Disparity Coalition (ACHDC) as the result of a partnership with the Indiana Minority Health Coalition (IMHC). The organization is comprised of over eighty organizations who collectively work to address the lack of adequate health care for minority citizens in Allen County. ACHDC meetings are held on the 4th Wednesday of each month from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM at the Fort Wayne Urban League.
In the fall of 2009, ACHDC, IMHC and HealthVisions Fort Wayne introduced the first Community-based Participatory Research project to the community targeting area minorities. The project, titled “Empowering Fort Wayne Communities to Self-Managing Diabetes” benefitted African American/Black and Latino/Hispanic populations by increasing their awareness regarding prevention, treatment and maintaining a healthy lifestyle while living with diabetes. In addition to combating the growing issue of diabetes among minorities, ACHDC has developed a strategic plan to address mental health, language, culture and health and nutrition. HealthVisions Fort Wayne conducts a number of programs that target these issues.
